When Hell Freezes Over, Lauren Davies, 2008

"When Hell Freezes Over" is an installation comprised of a life-size model of a polar bear surrounded by an assortment of handmade objects, digital print works and mixed-media models. The installation is based on a visit to a tiny regional museum located in the seaside village of Twillingate, Newfoundland - an institution that appears to be the creation of a slightly misguided yet well-intentioned PTA committee. Using the displays at this museum as a jumping off place, I have created my own version of the region's more recent history. "When Hell Freezes Over" suggests an allegorical fever dream involving global warming, taxidermy, museum displays and childhood craft projects with the title implying that the unimaginable or impossible is actually upon us. The world as we know it has flipped - the permafrost is melting and perhaps even Hell will freeze over.
